Brave Brid Battle Bramley & Upset Ossett
Brid were on the road for their first competitive fixture of 2026 travelling deep into the west of Gods to take on Bramley Phoenix and Ossett in a double header.
The both sides were set to provide a real test for the East Coast gladiators. The billing lived up to its expectation with two cracking battles in the mud at the Warrellls Rugby Ground. The home crowd had turned out in their numbers to pack out the small history steeped ground deep in the heart of the community.
Bramley Phoenix 6
Bridlington 3
Brid U11s faced Bramley in the first game who provided stern opposition. Phoenix were a strong well drilled outfit who were packed with talent. It was clear that to see that they played all year round with the lions share of their squad also playing for Stanningley Rugby League Team.
Phoenix dominated the first half of the fixture showing controlled aggression to steam roll Brid. Brid uncharacteristically easily turning over possession left them glued to their own try line resiliently trying to weather the storm of the Bramley Phoenix attack. Phoenix however showed no mercy and smashed their way over for 4 unanswered scores to go in 4-0 to the good at the break.
A temu version of Sir Alex Fergusons famous hairdryer treatment from the Brid coaching duo seemed to shake the lads into action as they went back out for a much improved dig in the 2nd half.
Reggie got the visitors on the scoreboard with a barnstormer of a run that skittled the Phoenix defence over like tenpins before planting the ball over the line. Brid managed to use the momentum to go back to back with Oscar somehow wriggling his way to the white wash to score. Phoenix seemed to wake back up and return to their rhythm bagging a brace to make it 6-2 to the hosts. Brid however didn’t give up and a great run by Kohan saw him put Ellis through a gap on the right edge and finish off a well worked move to score. Although going down 6-3 in the opener Brid took the 2nd half 3 - 2.
Ossett 3
Bridlington 8
Brid had a break following the hard fought first contest before locking horns with Ossett. The break didn’t favour Brid as they looked a bit rusty from the rest which resulted in Ossett catching them cold with three unanswered tries. It looked like Brid might have again given themselves a mountain to climb as they did in the first game however they managed to squeeze in two scores before the interval with a powerful score from Noel and mazy run from Kohan to score in the corner. Brid went into the sheds for half time within touching distance 3-2 down but with the momentum.
The 2nd half saw a relentless Brid take the game to Ossett in probably one of the best halves they have played this season. Ossett almost looked like they had put their que back on the rack when they were caught napping as George cleverly stole the ball to pick the Ossett pocket to score and level the game at 3-3.
The next Bridlington try was the games magic moment. Ossett restarted the game after the try with a deep kick that landed in the hands of fullback Ellis. He used his dancing feet to create space in the Ossett defensive line before turning on the afterburners and outstripping the full Ossest team to go the full length of the pitch to score in the right hand corner. At 4-3 Brid didn’t look back and with their opponents on the ropes they punished them every time they got an opportunity. Reggie and Noel were the next to score attacking the left flank and powering over the try line. At 6-3 up Brid then scored a carbon copy of the last two try’s a smash and grab from Ellis in the same corner. As the game was in the dying seconds Brid decided they had the time for one more. The ball worked neatly wide by George saw Kohan fly in for his 2nd of the morning and round off the scoring for Brid to take the spoils 8-3.
Special mentions today to both George who had a good game with the boot and Tommie who worked fearlessly in defence.
